about

Argyle was written in Chicago after my favorite street there. Argyle Street in Chicago is full of Vietnamese and Chinese food delights and cultural commerce. It was, and is, one of my favorite streets to hang out and take a stroll! I was in Chicago performing the Lyric Opera of Chicago's production of Showboat. On an off duty night, I sat down at the piano and conceived this piece specifically written for voice and string.

I was also inspired by the argyle pattern. This track is an illustration of two bold shapes, or musical voices, which structurally interconnect within a canvas of sound. Both voices have their own melody which exchange between being supportive and being presented. Midway, both voice and violin break convention, musically expressing their individual emotional abandon. The 3rd section represents going back to the previous structure; however, both voices have been affected and changed. Nonetheless, each voice still seeks to find balance with each other and inevitably fall silent.
